Better Angels Red-Blue Workshop – Bridging the Political Divide

May 18 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

What: An invitation-only workshop bringing together 7 Republican-leaning citizens and 7 Democratic-leaning citizens for a day of structured conversations. Independents (purples) are welcome to attend this workshop, but to ensure balance and to make this process work, we ask that you identify and participate as either “Red” (leaning Republican, Libertarian, and/or conservative) or “Blue” (leaning Democratic, liberal, and/or progressive). We also have slots open for quiet observers (regardless of Red/Blue status).  For more information about Better Angels Red-Blue Workshops, see https://www.better-angels.org/what-we-do/

●      Understand the experiences and beliefs of those on the other side of the political divide
●      See if there are areas of agreement in addition to areas where we respectfully disagree
●      Learn something that might be helpful to others in our community and our nation who are concerned about our current state of political polarization and partisanship
  • Identify and commit to next steps: e.g., join Better Angels and work together to reduce the polarization in our community, sponsor more of these workshops, and/or form a local red-blue alliance to help build bridges across political divides, calm partisan rhetoric, better understand each other, and embrace things that bring us together rather than keep us apart
The Process: A focus on listening, reflecting, understanding, and respecting, rather than debating, persuading, or “winning”

Hosts: Organized by Better Angels of the Triangle

Moderators: Joan Garnett, Dana Robinson, Steve Warshaw

When:  Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (please arrive by 9:30, bring your own lunch and snacks – coffee will be provided)

Where:  Chatham Habitat for Humanity 467 West St, Pittsboro, NC

About Better Angels: In Abraham Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address in 1861, with the nation on the brink of Civil War, he appealed to the “better angels of our nature.”  Today, in a nation screaming with headlines about our divisions, we have an opportunity to call forth something “better” within us and within the country we share.

Launched in 2016, Better Angels is a bipartisan citizen’s movement to unify our divided nation. By bringing red and blue Americans together into a working alliance, we’re building new ways to talk to one another, participate together in public life, and reduce the polarization and partisanship in our nation.  Learn more about us here: www.better-angels.org
