A Conversation About Songs and Poetry

September 14 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Chatham Community Library will host a program on song and poetry on Saturday, September 14, at 2:00 pm in the Holmes Meeting Room.  2019 NC Piedmont Laureate David Menconi will moderate a discussion between poet and 2017 Laureate, Mimi Herman, and singer song-writer, Wes Collins, about the craft of writing songs or poetry or both.

Menconi is a former music critic and arts reporter for the News & Observer and has also written for Rolling Stone, Spin, Billboard, New York Times and salon.com. His books include the 2012 biography Ryan Adams: Losering, A Story of Whiskeytown (University of Texas Press), and his next book will be a history of North Carolina music for UNC Press. He also hosts “That Old North State Radio Hour,” a weekly show about North Carolina music, on That Station, 95.7-FM in Raleigh.

Mimi Herman has taught over 25,000 teachers and students to fall in love with writing and integrate the arts across the curriculum. Mimi is a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist, director of the UAC Arts Integration Institute, the 2017 NC Piedmont Laureate and co-director of Writeaways workshops in France, Italy, New Mexico and North Carolina. The author of Logophilia and The Art of Learning, her poetry and fiction have been published across the country.

Collins is a local singer song-writer and 2015 winner of the Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters. He describes his music as, “guitar driven folk-pop with teeth”. His debut album, One Layer Down, was released in 2013. Since appearing at Kerrville, Wes has played throughout the Southwest, from the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville to a formal showcase at the Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Conference in Austin.  In 2017 Wes took second place in Moravia Texas’s Songwriter Serenade and received a songwriting fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council, which funded his latest CD Welcome to the Ether.  The multi-talented Collins is also a librarian at the Chatham Community Library in Pittsboro.

This event is free and open to the public.
